<h3>A Solution Focused Hypnotherapist’s Perspective</h3>When clients come to me for help with weight management, I understand that it’s never just about the weight. It’s about the whole person their habits, mindset, emotions, stress levels, and often, their sleep quality. Weight can sometimes be a symptom of deeper issues, and that’s where solution-focused hypnotherapy can offer a truly holistic approach. Understanding Habits and the Brain’s Role One of the key areas I focus on when working with clients is the way habits are formed and stored in the brain. Often, people develop eating habits that go beyond the physical need for food. Emotional triggers, such as stress or anxiety, can lead someone to seek comfort in food. This pattern of behaviour can become so automatic that it feels impossible to change. This is where the hippocampus comes in. The hippocampus, which is responsible for memory and habit formation, stores these eating habits over time. For example, if a client has always reached for sugary snacks when they feel stressed, this behaviour becomes ingrained and stored as a response pattern in the brain. However, it’s important to remember that while these habits are stored, they aren’t fixed. The brain has the ability to change through neuroplasticity, meaning that with the right approach, new, healthier habits can be formed. In our sessions, I work with clients to address these patterns, helping them recognise when they’re acting out of habit rather than hunger. Many clients come in feeling frustrated, having tried various diets and exercise programs without lasting success. Often, that’s because these approaches focus on the symptoms (the weight itself) rather than the underlying causes, such as: • &nbsp; &nbsp;Stress: Stress plays a significant role in weight gain for many people. When we’re stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol, which can lead to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen. Not only that, but stress often triggers emotional eating. Hypnotherapy helps clients manage their stress in a healthy way, reducing the likelihood of turning to food for comfort. • &nbsp; &nbsp;Sleep Issues: Poor sleep is another common issue that can affect weight management. When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies produce more ghrelin (a hormone that increases hunger) and less leptin (which signals fullness). As part of our work together, I often focus on helping clients improve their sleep patterns, which can have a significant impact on their overall health and well-being. • &nbsp; &nbsp;Self-Esteem and Body Image: Weight issues can also be tied to negative self-image or low self-esteem. Many clients have spent years feeling uncomfortable in their bodies, which can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, or frustration. In our sessions, I help clients reframe how they see themselves, building a more positive relationship with their body and fostering a sense of self-compassion. The Miracle Question: Keeping It Realistic A key part of my solution-focused approach is using the Miracle Question (MQ). This technique helps clients visualise what their future could look like if they achieved their goals. When it comes to weight management, it’s important that this vision is both realistic and meaningful for the client.Rather than focusing on an ideal weight, I might ask: “If a miracle happened overnight and you woke up feeling healthier and more in control of your lifestyle, what’s the first thing you’d notice?” This shifts the focus from a specific number on the scale to the broader benefits of living a healthy life. It could be that the client feels more energetic, more confident, or sleeps better. One of the most important things to remember is that every client’s idea of a healthy lifestyle is different. As the expert in their own life, the client knows best what changes they want to make and how they want to measure their progress. For some clients, a healthy lifestyle might mean becoming more physically active, choosing nutritious foods, or reducing portion sizes. For others, it might involve addressing emotional eating, reducing stress, or improving sleep. My role is not to dictate what “healthy” should look like for them, but to guide them in defining it for themselves. I often ask questions like: • &nbsp; &nbsp;“When you imagine yourself feeling your best, what kinds of habits do you see yourself having?” • &nbsp; &nbsp;“What small changes would make the biggest difference for you?” • &nbsp; &nbsp;“How would your life look different if you felt more in control of your health?” These kinds of questions allow the client to visualise their version of success. They help me tailor my approach to each individual, ensuring that the changes we work on together are both meaningful and sustainable. The Client is Always the Expert. In solution-focused hypnotherapy, the client is always the expert in their own life. When it comes to weight management, this principle is especially important. No two clients will approach their journey in the same way, and it’s crucial that I respect each person’s individual preferences and pace. I like to explore the client’s previous experiences with weight management. By asking “What’s worked for you in the past?”, I encourage them to reflect on their strengths and build on those. It’s also important to ask “What do you feel ready to start with?”, which helps the client take ownership of their journey and feel empowered to make changes that feel achievable. Another essential aspect of this work is understanding that success isn’t always about the numbers on the scale. While some clients may use weight as a marker of progress, others may focus on how their clothes fit, their energy levels, or how they feel mentally and emotionally. I help clients identify these alternative measures of success, so they can celebrate the small victories along the way. It is key to remember here too that the human body is only designed to lose 2lbs of excess weight a week, so it is imperative that all goals are small and manageable. Dependent Personality Disorder: A pervasive need to be cared for, leading to submissive and clinging behaviors and a fear of separation. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD): A preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control at the expense of flexibility and openness. How Are Personality Disorders Diagnosed? Diagnosing a personality disorder requires a comprehensive psychological evaluation conducted by a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. This typically involves a detailed interview to assess long-term patterns of behavior, thoughts, and emotions. The criteria for each disorder are outlined in the DSM-5, and a diagnosis is made if the individual's symptoms match the specific disorder's characteristics.</figure>Diagnosis can be challenging because personality disorders often overlap with other mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety. Brain Structure and Functioning: Some studies have found differences in the brain structure and functioning of individuals with certain personality disorders, particularly in areas related to emotional regulation and impulse control. While these factors may increase the likelihood of developing a personality disorder, not everyone with these risk factors will develop one.4. What Problems Can Be Linked to Personality Disorders? Personality disorders can lead to a wide range of issues that affect various aspects of a person's life. These may include: Relationship Difficulties: People with personality disorders often struggle with forming and maintaining stable relationships. Their behaviors and emotional patterns can cause conflicts and misunderstandings with others. Work and Social Problems: The inflexibility in thinking and behavior associated with personality disorders can lead to difficulties in the workplace and social settings. Individuals may have trouble adapting to changing situations or managing stress. Mental Health Issues: Personality disorders frequently co-occur with other mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or eating disorders. Self-harm and Suicidal Behavior: Some personality disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder, are associated with an increased risk of self-harm and suicidal behavior, often as a way to cope with intense emotional pain. 5. When Wouldn’t a Hypnotherapist Work with a Client with a Personality Disorder? Hypnotherapy can be beneficial for many people, but working with clients who have personality disorders requires extra caution. In some cases, it may not be appropriate for a hypnotherapist to work with these clients at all, particularly if the client’s symptoms are severe, untreated, or if they are not under the care of a mental health professional. Here are some guidelines for hypnotherapists when considering working with clients who have personality disorders:Cluster A Disorders Clients with Cluster A disorders (paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal) may be less suited for hypnotherapy due to their suspicious or eccentric thought patterns, which can make it difficult for them to engage in the therapeutic process or trust the hypnotherapist. These individuals may be at risk of feeling manipulated or misinterpreting the therapist’s intentions.Extra Care with Clients in Cluster A: If a hypnotherapist does decide to work with someone in this group, extra care should be taken in building rapport and ensuring clear communication. Hypnotherapists should also screen for any use of antipsychotic medication and consult with the client’s psychiatrist or mental health professional. Liaising with a supervisor is crucial to ensure that the hypnotherapy process is handled with the appropriate sensitivity and care.Cluster B Disorders Clients with Cluster B disorders, especially those with borderline or antisocial personality disorder, may present particular challenges for hypnotherapists. These individuals may exhibit impulsive, erratic, or manipulative behavior that can disrupt the therapeutic process. In cases where there is a history of violence, self-harm, or significant instability, hypnotherapy may not be advisable without the involvement of a multidisciplinary mental health team.Cluster C Disorders While clients with Cluster C disorders may be anxious or overly dependent, they are often more willing to engage in hypnotherapy. However, hypnotherapists should be aware of the potential for these clients to become overly reliant on therapy, and clear boundaries should be set.In conclusion, hypnotherapists must exercise caution and professional judgment when considering working with clients who have personality disorders. As a clinical hypnotherapist, the topic of Google reviews or testimonials can feel like a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, positive reviews can significantly boost your visibility and credibility. On the other hand, when working with vulnerable clients, there are ethical, legal, and even personal considerations that make actively pushing for reviews a questionable practice. In this blog, I’ll explore some of the complexities around asking for reviews, particularly for professionals in the hypnotherapy field.The Legal Landscape: GDPR, Client Consent, and Insurance One of the first things to consider when asking clients for reviews or testimonials is the legal framework. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires explicit consent for any personal data to be shared publicly. When a client leaves a review, especially if they mention details about their mental health or therapeutic process, that information is classified as sensitive data under GDPR. This means clients must fully understand how their data will be used, and they must give clear, informed consent, this needs to be part of your client agreement, wrote into your GDPR or privacy policy and also confirmed by your insurance company, to ensure it complies with informed consent, but it is not always that simple. A client may feel hesitant to say no to a therapist with whom they’ve built a trusting relationship. This could blur the lines of informed consent, as the client might feel pressured (even if unintentionally) due to the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. Requesting a review could be uncomfortable or even distressing for some clients. For example, a client from a faith background may feel reluctant to share their experiences with hypnotherapy publicly due to stigma associated with therapy in their community or religion. Similarly, vulnerable clients who are experiencing severe anxiety or depression may not have the emotional bandwidth to assess whether or not leaving a review is truly in their best interest.Another concern is how a review might impact a client in the long term. A client who has overcome anxiety might leave a glowing review, thanking hypnotherapy for their transformation. However, months or years later, that same client may apply for a job, a mortgage, or even holiday insurance, forgetting that their review mentioned mental health issues. If these issues haven’t been declared in their applications, the review could complicate their situation—something they may not have considered at the time.Testimonials, the ASA, and CAP There’s also the issue of advertising standards. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) set guidelines for healthcare professionals, including hypnotherapists, when it comes to using testimonials. Testimonials cannot make medical claims or imply guaranteed outcomes, which can sometimes be difficult to control. A well-meaning client may leave a review saying they were "cured" of their anxiety or that hypnotherapy "completely healed" their PTSD. Clients may feel an unspoken pressure to leave a review, especially if they feel a sense of gratitude towards their therapist. For example, if a client has had a particularly positive experience overcoming a phobia, they might feel obliged to share this online, even if they are uncomfortable with public exposure. This can be particularly problematic for vulnerable clients, who may find it difficult to refuse such a request, even if the therapist doesn't explicitly ask for a review.Weighing the Pros and Cons From a personal perspective, I would never "encourage" reviews from clients dealing with anxiety or mental health-related issues. The ethical risks and potential complications are simply too high.&nbsp; Of course they can voluntarily leave a review via google or other platform and reviews can have a positive impact for services such as stop smoking hypnosis or help with phobias, where the therapeutic relationship may feel less vulnerable or personal.
