Full Terms & Conditions for Hypnotherapy Supervision with John Lowson (December 2025)

The aim of this Supervision Contract is to explain the points and purpose of supervision. This contract clarifies the goals, expectations, roles, and responsibilities of both the supervisor and the supervisee. It provides the framework for a successful supervisory relationship whilst protecting all parties involved.

Supervision is a forum where supervisees review and reflect on their work in order to do it better. These confidential discussions can happen in groups or individually, face to face, or over the telephone. It is a working relationship that requires regular contact between the Supervisor and Supervisee with the aim to maximise the growth and development of the Supervisee to ensure they are able to offer the highest levels of competence in working with their clients.

You must notify your association and make them aware of your supervisor.

Frequency of Supervision
The NCH/APHP stipulates that all members need to attend a MINIMUM of six hours per year, however, you can attend as many sessions as you wish. Other associations may vary; the onus is on yourself to ensure that supervision quota attended is satisfactory requirement for your individual associations.

This can be achieved in the following ways:

•       2 group supervision sessions (typically 3 hours per session)

•       2 telephone/Zoom sessions (Each session 1 hour in total, maybe broken down into smaller sessions as long as the cumulative total is 1 hour per session)

•       Six individual face-to-face sessions (Each session 1 hour in total, maybe broken down into smaller sessions as long as the cumulative total is 1 hour)

•       A mixture of the above.

Please note that I am a registered supervisor for hypnotherapists that are registered with the AfSFH (Association of Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and/or the NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) and the APHP (Association of professional hypnosis and psychotherapy) If you are registered with a different professional association, the onus is on yourself to ensure that supervision would be applicable to satisfy your individual supervision requirements.

Group Supervision
Group Supervision will normally take place on Zoom usually on a Wednesday evening, Friday Afternoon or a Saturday morning. Lasting for up to three hours, times and dates will be communicated to supervisees via email and private WhatsApp group.

Every other monthly Saturday session is held normally face-to-face at a venue within the Halifax area, and the meeting can also be accessed via a Zoom link (interactive video conferencing).

Booking for Group Supervision is essential, and Supervisees are required to let me know of your attendance via email ([email protected]) or telephone (07532 719402) at least one week before the session.

Numbers will be restricted so it is the responsibility of the Supervisee to ensure their frequency of attendance meets the minimum requirements given above.

About John:

I am trained and been in practice as a solution-focused clinical hypnotherapist since 2018. I am a Senior Lecturer for SFTA. I am a member of the CNHC, NCH, and the APHP. I run a very successful hypnotherapy clinic (The Halifax Hypnotherapy Clinic Ltd) on the outskirts of Halifax, West Yorkshire.

I also run a training company dedicated to the training and development of hypnotherapists.

My background before hypnotherapy was from a sales and marketing industry, having worked for both corporate companies and privately-owned companies. I have a vast knowledge of sales and marketing, digital marketing, and have been involved in running many multi-million-pound businesses at director level.

I use a Solution Focused Approach to Supervision which operates from a respectful, non-expert, and collaborative viewpoint focusing on the experience strengths, resources, learning, and experience of the Group and Individual Practitioner

Code of Ethics and Confidentiality

Ethical considerations with confidentiality are assured during supervision from both the Supervisor and the Supervisee, enabling the therapeutic relationship to build through trust, openness, learning, and rapport. However, there may be circumstances when confidentiality may be overridden if there are grounds to believe the safety of the client or of those surrounding the client are at risk.

Overall, the same rules as therapist-client confidentiality and its relation to the notion of “greater good” apply to the Supervisee-Supervisor relationship. Please see below for more details:

NCH Code of Conduct and Ethics hypnotherapists.org.uk/about-nch/code-of-ethics/

I take my CPD as a Supervisor as seriously as I do my CPD as a Hypnotherapist. As a result, I engage in regular supervision for my supervision practice and so may discuss issues with my supervisor. This ensures I am as effective as possible in working with my Supervisees. This is a professional relationship governed by confidentiality and Supervisees will not be named in these conversations; every effort will be made to maintain their confidentiality.

Legal Responsibilities
Supervisor and Supervisee have legal liabilities to each other, to any employing organisation and above all, to their clients. This includes my taking action if I have serious concerns about a supervisee’s practice, especially where client safety is concerned as outlined above.

Any guidance or advice provided regarding our personal practice, modalities or clients is offered for informational purposes only and should not be construed as our formal opinion or the opinion of any professional hypnotherapy organisations, unless expressly stated otherwise. We disclaim any responsibility for representing the views of such organisations unless explicitly stated.

Association Responsibilities
I have a responsibility as a supervisor to construct and maintain a data base of active supervision participants and have a duty to report to the associations any supervisee who is absent from regular supervision. This may involve the associations investigating and conducting an audit and in turn result in suspension on downgrading of membership status. This is reviewed on a regular basis. I also have a duty to keep the NCH Director of Supervision updated when a Registered Member misses more than three supervisions (i.e. has not been in supervision for three months) and to notify the Standards Officer of any concerns regarding a Supervisee’s practice that is unable to be addressed through supervision.

Supervisee Peer Contact and Liability Clause
Any contact made directly between supervisees, outside of Halifax Hypnotherapy Clinic Ltd (HHC) facilitated sessions, will indemnify HHC from all liability. HHC will not be responsible for any advice, discussions, or communications between supervisees that are not arranged or supervised by HHC.

Supervisees are reminded that they may not be covered by their professional insurance to give advice—whether it be client-related, business-related, or otherwise—to other supervisees. Any advice exchanged between peers that is not within a formal supervision session may be outside the scope of insurance coverage and could be deemed as a breach of GDPR without informed consent.

All peer-to-peer contact is encouraged to take place during official supervision sessions to ensure professional standards are maintained, and any shared advice is within the appropriate legal and ethical framework.

Expressed Opinions:

Given the nuanced and personal nature of clinical practice, individual perspectives may occasionally be shared during sessions. Please note that such views are expressed without prejudice and do not constitute formal professional or legal jurisdiction. Personal opinions belong solely to the speaker and do not necessarily reflect the official positions of Halifax Hypnotherapy Clinic, John Lowson, Natalie Hardcastle, or any affiliated professional bodies. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding defamatory, insulting, or abusive conduct; any such behaviour may result in immediate removal from the meeting and disqualification from the supervision process.

Changes to this Contract:

This contract may be subject to change from time to time. The Supervisee will be notified in writing if any changes occur.
